NASA JOINS PARTNERS FOR OCEAN SURFACE TOPOGRAPHY MISSION
NASA has signed an agreement with other U.S. and international
agencies to launch the Ocean Surface Topography Mission in 2008.
NASA has awarded a subcontract to Northrop Grumman Space Technology in Redondo
Beach,
Calif., to develop an ultra-cold mechanical helium cryocooler for the
Mid-Infrared Instrument on the
James Webb Space Telescope. The contract totals about $22 million.
Nearly 400 years after Galileo determined the wispy Milky Way actually
comprises myriad individual stars, scientists using NASA's Rossi
X-ray Timing Explorer have done the same for the "X-ray Milky Way."
